Custom Order Process |

I thought it would be fun to share a bit about a custom orders, and the back and forth communication that happens during the process. I’m normally so busy dyeing pieces or posting finished images that I don’t often think to share them as WIPs (works in progress).

First things first, I need to know what you’d like to have dyed (shirt, sweats, etc.) as well as specific thoughts on color. We can do this over the phone or by email… or I can send you to my very favorite secret page on the site— the Chroma Key!

Cue exciting music:

I’m pretty obsessed with it.

It’s a custom design tool to deep dive you into all the information I think about when painting custom pieces. There are color swatches for you to peruse, questions to consider and answer, and a handy dandy “submit” button at the bottom to send me everything I need to know.

If that sounds overwhelming and not your style, no problem. I can also color match to inspiration images or even just go on vibezzz. Those work too.

But first a PSA:

If you do want to go with vibes more than specific details, I am so cool with that…

BUT

Please please don’t ask me to paint a piece over {or what have you} because the end result isn’t what you now have in mind. If you give me only a tidbit of information to work with

like:they love orange!”

Then I will paint you an orange masterpiece… but I’m not open to doing it again and again… because that’s no fun for me.

I used to. But,

☝🏼 That’s a 90’s deep cut right there. If you can identify that video, or what I mean by it, you get a gold star ⭐️

I digress!

One of my very favorite clients wanted a white sweatsuit dyed to give as a gift. She knew she needed it by early November and preferred a hoodie set. I checked the stock I had on hand, sent images of options for her to choose from, and got those squared away.

She wanted the pieces to be more covered in dye than not (little negative space) and primarily dyed with greens. Muted tones in the grey/green or green/brown families. And avoiding purple.

She hopped on the Chroma Key and requested two color palettes to be swatched. ✨This is the best way to know if you truly love the colors you’ve selected, and provide opportunities to make changes prior to your order being dyed.✨ Sample swatches are painted for color value {and not exact pattering}.

Because I have a no scraps left behind policy, swatches are then re-purposed and used for gift wrapping or studio sewing projects.

Upon sending images for review, we discussed her favorite (she loved swatch 1) and agreed it was time to dye.

I normally dye pieces with multiple rounds of color, and sometimes share process photos as I go. Here are the sweats after the first round of color:

And completed, after a third round:

Pretty cool, right?!

Every order is sent tissue wrapped with fun accoutrements including: colorful string or fabric, a sticker and a care card.

But if you tell me to wrap it any way I like (she did!) expect some whimsical touches:

✨ Pee-wee Herman wrapping paper

✨ a gold shimmer magic wand

✨ two beautiful crystals (no clue which kind)

✨ silk ribbon dyed with homegrown marigold and calendula

You never know what kind of pretty do-dads I have on hand.

Mara Hoffman Re-work |

Also a custom order. A friend bought this lovely dress (with an unpictured stain on the side) and brought it to me for up-cycling. We had patterning and color ideas, but she was very open to me experimenting and playing around with the piece.

Here it is after the first round of color:

And completed, after a second:

What stain, amirite?

Prints |

I’ve wanted to offer Made to Order prints for so long, and they’ve finally arrived! Or better yet, they will arrive when you place an order and one is specially printed just for you!

I actually call these marks my sploots or drips. They’re unique moments, that happen in a flash, where I was able to capture the beautiful mess around me before it morphed or flowed away.

Currently available in two sizes, though I’d be happy to discuss a custom order if you’re looking for something larger.

New in Ready Made |

If you’ve been following along, whether in the Journal or Instagram, you know a long awaited workshop was scheduled for this month. Sadly… due to circumstances beyond my control my collaborator wasn’t able to jointly host, and it was a total bummer.

That said, I’m working on studio classes and one on one sessions that can be booked online and hope to launch them soon-ish.

And until then, I’m still over here making rainbows.
